From June to September, humidity across Maharashtra stays high for weeks at a time — and in Mumbai and along the Konkan coast, the air carries salt as well. Lighting is an investment meant to last decades, so it is worth choosing materials with the climate in mind.
Brass
Solid brass is durable and develops a soft patina with age. Lacquered finishes such as satin brass resist tarnish well; unlacquered and antique finishes will darken slowly, which many people love. In coastal homes, choose a lacquered finish and wipe the fixture down after the monsoon. Never use metal polish on a lacquered piece — a soft, dry cloth is enough.
Glass
Glass shades are the easiest to live with. Dust and humidity can leave a film, so clean them two or three times a year with lukewarm water and a drop of mild soap, then dry fully before refitting. Fluted and textured glass hide fingerprints and water marks better than clear glass.
Crystal
Crystal sparkles only when it is clean. Twice a year — once after the monsoon, once before the festive season — switch off the power, wear cotton gloves and wipe each drop with a microfibre cloth lightly dampened with a 1:3 mix of isopropyl alcohol and water. Our crystal chandeliers are designed so drops can be unhooked and cleaned individually.
A note on electricals
Monsoon voltage fluctuations are common in many parts of Pune. Use good-quality LED bulbs from a reputable brand and, for large fixtures, have your electrician check the earthing and the ceiling mounting before installation.
